friday blues

today in history:

born today
  • the great baseball player Jackie Robinson in 1919
  • another great baseball player Nolan Ryan in 1947
  • Franz Schubert in 1897
  • Justin Timberlake in 1981
other stuff that happened today

  • Apollo 14 launched in 1971 on its way to the moon
  • Explorer satellite launched in 1958 became the first successful US satellite
  • Project Mercury test launch with Ham, the chimpanzee aboard in 1961
  • denise and Alida hung out at the patriots hotel in Atlanta so we could see a few, and we did:

when it popped up on my feed it was a painful reminder that we are not in the superbowl this year.  i know we should not expect it every year, but.....

smart park - with a boston accent.  just saw this ad and i can't stop laughing, love it!

so this article says you have to lie about who you really are to succeed at work.  i guess i always knew this but its harsh to see in writing.  https://www.fastcompany.com/90458272/3-things-you-must-do-to-make-a-good-impression-in-a-new-job?utm_campaign=eem524%3A524%3As00%3A20200131_fc&utm_medium=Compass&utm_source=newsletter

thirsty thursday

today in history:

  • gandhi assassinated in 1948
  • the beatles' last concert - 1969.  for those who know who the beatles' are!
  • bloody sunday in londonderry northern ireland - 1972
  • first brawl in the us house of representatives in 1798.  this means there was more than one?

  • an informative story regarding how to protect yourself from coronavirus or influenza, esp when on a plane.
    • infection area in say an office:
      • According to Emily Landon, medical director of antimicrobial stewardship and infection control at the University of Chicago Medicine, the hospital’s guidelines for influenza define exposure as being within six feet of an infected person for 10 minutes or longer.
    • on a plane:
      • The World Health Organization defines contact with an infected person as being seated within two rows of one another.  Because more people move around more on longer flights, the longer the flight, the more susceptible you are to being in contact with an infected person.   The 'Fly Healthy Research Team' says that the window seats have least opportunity to come into contact with an infected person.
    • Landon suggests following the CDC guidelines for infections diseases when you are on an airplane:
      • wash your hands with regular soap or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer after touching any surface. very important since there is evidence that coronaviruses last 3 to 12 hours on surfaces.

we are in the middle of a home entertainment nightmare and this article covers most of the pain i am currently feeling (and paying for) https://www.inputmag.com/features/drowning-in-movies-tv-shows-streaming-disney-netflix-hbo-nbc?link_uid=43

happy data privacy day - stay safe online

in atlanta today to attend a data privacy day event - happy hour tonight.  it's official, i am now a nerd!

Apollo I spacecraft fire happened 53 years ago yesterday. Astronauts Grissom, White and Chaffee  died.  34 years ago today the space shuttle Challenger exploded killing 7.  Not a good time of year to be going into space.

  • when i was a kid, i was fascinated by the exploits of NASA and their astronauts.  then they just stopped doing stuff.
  • now we have to look to private companies for this excitement and many are not forthcoming, except Elon Musk.   not sure if he is hero or villian but it is an interesting read:   https://www.inverse.com/innovation/spacex-crew-dragon-the-next-six-months

on the patriots - belichick - brady front.  Bill was hired 20 years ago today and the rest, as they say, is history:

On the downside - Dante Scarnecchia the o line coach retired today.  was a hard season for him

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, one of my favorite books was published today in 1813.   i may have to read again this weekend.  or at least watch one of the movies!

friday, january 24, 2020

so i'm super busy today but i saw this article about men truing to taste soy sauce with their balls (long story) and could not help but read and laugh.  i needed that, perhaps you do too?  https://thetakeout.com/balls-taste-buds-soy-sauce-tiktok-1841157821?utm_source=nl&utm_brand=ba&utm_mailing=BA_ROTD_012420_Beggs&utm_campaign=aud-dev&utm_medium=email&bxid=5c92b85b24c17c329beffd1b&cndid=33983891&esrc=bounceX&utm_term=BA_Recipe_Of_The_Day

i actually found this story about Mr Peanut's death sad.  he has been one of those brand reps that has been around forever, at least my entire life.  not sure how i feel about the parent company sacrificing him for a commercial,  smh.  https://www.vox.com/the-goods/2020/1/22/21077210/mr-peanut-dead-super-bowl-planters-matt-walsh-wesley-snipes?bxid=5c92b85b24c17c329beffd1b&cndid=33983891&esrc=bounceX

thursday, january 23, 2020

yesterday was another failed blogging event but practice makes perfect!

looking at list of material that is leaving netflix next month and i am surprised to see the Matrix trilogy, the first is a classic and the next two meh.  still i would not think a classic would leave.  will have to watch again.  district 9 is also leaving so will view that again.  i do not usually go to netflix to watch movies, i really never think about it.  it is more of a "show" view for me, similar to what i used to watch on traditional tv or old shows that i want to see.  fat cry from when i was growing up and we had channels 2 (pbs), 4 (nbc) 5 (cbs) and 7 (abc) to watch on a black and white tv.  i remember being so excited when 2 independent stations (38 and 56) became available if you had a special round antenna (vhs). lucky for us my mom was willing to spring a few bucks for the antenna so we could watch reruns of old movies and stupid local shows like Major Mudd .

netflix shows to target in the next few weeks:

  • clouds of sils maria
  • disrict 9
  • trainspotting (has been years since i saw this one - funny and depressing)
  • layer cake
  • stripes - because it makes me laugh
  • the matrix
all of this is to distract me from the latest world health hazzard 2019-nCoV or the Wuhan Flu.  first US case discovered in washington state in a 30 year old man who just returned from Wuhan Province in CHina.  He is recovering but the thought of the potential for this to spread is mind boggling

MUST DO WORK Now

traveling day

friday, january 17, 2020

having the pleasure of visiting our alpharetta office today.  pretty fancy schmancy.  here was the sunrise view:

this office has a food delivery service that they sponsor for staff on monday, wednesday and fridays called foodsby.  as it is friday i was invited to participate!  i have been pretty good all week so i decided to go for the tempura bowl from a poke place.  shrimp tempura, gyoza and spring roll, all my guilty pleasures!  as i brought a banana with me, glad to be able to try this option.   Update, it was tasty and all i had to do was walk down the hall to pick it up.  great idea.

part of the reason i chose to come up here is that i have an appointment at the apple store at avalon.  i could get in trouble there!

closing out early so i can have my fun at Apple!

thirsty thursday

thursday, january 16, 2020

really trying to get my act together and one of the dr infused goals is to have 20 grams of fiber a day so i can have healthy💩and i found that fiber one original cereal is not bad and filling to keep me happy for the morning whcih is really important when doing the fasting thing.  so this morning i reached for my skim mil and it was bad🤮(i hate when that happens)  so not fiber today!  i am trying this new product instead so i am not a total slacker:

it is tasty but a little sweet, have only been able to do half the bottle in one sitting.

saw this map on global warming and temperature change accross the world and although i do not aggree with the us gov't general lack of concern i do think i understand why it is not an internal US fear.  the us appears to have the least amount of temperature change in the world.  see the article here: https://www.inverse.com/article/62302-nasa-noaa-2019-climate-report-future?link_uid=11&utm_campaign=inverse-daily-2020-01-16&utm_medium=inverse&utm_source=newsletter

made red beans and rice with smoked sausage yesterday for lunch and it was very tasty.  jack even enjoyed.   guess what i am having for lunch today!!!

crazy day once again and tomorrow i have to be in atlanta at 7am so early on the road!!

nite y'all

good morning, afternoon, evening.

quarterly tax payments are due today for 4th q 2019.  get to the post office and request hand cancel if you waited until today, i sent mine last week and am happy to report were received on saturday, phew.

this article about how to work a 4 day, 6 hour a week work day was interesting reading.  i think not checking social media (or blogging) would be a big help!  https://www.fastcompany.com/90451712/to-get-more-done-in-four-6-hour-workdays-do-these-three-things?utm_campaign=eem524%3A524%3As00%3A20200115_fc&utm_medium=Compass&utm_source=newsletter

up until last year i had not heard the term "Denisovans" and now it appears that DNA from this ancient species is found in current Homo Sapiens along with ancient species Neanderthal DNA.   There are also two more ancient species DNA in our current strands.

Mind Blown Emoji Png Clipart , Png Download - Mind Blown Emoji Transparent Background, Transparent Cartoons

Actual different species.  Now this makes sense as we are who are parents were but the thought of these ancient people mating with other species is crazy.  now i am sure it is not like humans mating with cats but this still gives one something to think about.  the fabricated visual differences between these early species are very different and it is not like saying you like dark haired guys over blonds.  it is different and i am so curious what would cause these different species to mate with each other.  the second article relates that our current faces are due to choosing mates with the less scary face, a face that appears to be less aggressive.  possibly why of the 4 early species none of them survived and eventually became the homo sapiens we now know and the differences in facial structure is actual due to mutations.  the articles are here if you are as fascinated as i am:

hubby just came to me with ?: do i need to upgrade to windows 10?  why?  windows 7 is no longer supported.  🤦🏼‍♀️  i had no idea he was still using 7. turns out i bought his laptop in 2014!   🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️    he is now looking at new computers.  ugh

until tomorrow!

tuesday, january 14, 2020

still super busy

the best thing that happened today:
my former boss called me today. we chatted for over an hour!  i so miss her.  she owned the company i worked for and then she sold it and she is enjoying her life after YEARS of working her butt off, congratulations!  she is so much fun and always so invigorating to chat with.

2nd best thing to happen today:
Jack decided to make flatbread for dinner (we have never done this before). because i am fasting i had to eat by 6pm so he made mine first and i had it by 5:30.  so sweet.  i understand i was the experiment but it was still nice of him to come up with this.  i would have eaten something crappy at the last minute.  he used "flatout" flatbread and on it i had: gouda and feta cheese, tavern ham, sun dried tomatoes, black olives and red onion (raw).  sounds like a hot mess but it was awesome!!!  next time i will maybe add a very thin slice of tomato?  nice and lite.  perfect for the end of day meal.

so the day started harried and crazy but ended well.  hope your day was all you wanted it to be.

monday again

monday, january 13, 2020

ugh.  started at 5am today plus have the housekeepers coming = laundry all day.  im beat by noon!

day 8 in the intermittent fasting thing.  still going, just not as enthusiastic as i once was.

first food: 8:30am so start fasting at 4:30pm

nerd alert!

Saturday, January 11, 2020

I was searching for a second screen for my work laptop that would also work with my new Mac.  I remembered that it was possible to use new iPad mini as a second screen and POOF!  it is done!  this is so cool.  now I have the mini so it is small but it is perfect to park stuff I am working on and bring over to main screen when I need it.  solves problem of trying to find something that works with windows and Mac.  yay!  small victories!

Jack kept telling me that there was a "big storm" coming our way on saturday and to do all my errands on friday.  im like, what big storm?  then i opened the radar up and looked at a bigger area.  yup, i now see the storm:

we are only supposed to get a bunch of rain but up north should get snow.  hope everyone is safe and comfy in their houses until it blows over.  I need a little shopping trip this morning to get essentials then I will be home.  planning to clean out closet.  ugh

lunch at palmers, plungerhead zin, fig and goat cheese flatbread and my book.  heaven

day 6 of the fasting routine.

not bad but im not listing my food here!

have a great saturday

Friday, January 10, 2020

fridays?

friday, january 10, 2020

had my skin cancer screening today.  clear for another year, woo hoo!

busy day, lots to do plus have to get new computer lenses in old glasses.  does anyone buy new glasses these days?

drinkibng green tea is supposed to make you live a little longer:  https://www.inverse.com/article/62202-drinking-tea-could-help-you-live-almost-2-years-longer?link_uid=55&utm_campaign=inverse-daily-2020-01-10&utm_medium=inverse&utm_source=newsletter

day 5 of intermittent fasting is a little rocky because i am weak and passed by a starbucks!  i will not even post what i ate

Thursday, January 9, 2020

just another thursday

thursday, january 9, 2020

big news from yesterday!  no, not my news, nothing ever happens here.  Megan and Harry!.  i drop the titles because i don't think they will have them for long.  when i read their  announcement on instagram i thought it made sense.  Megan is not happy with how the press have treated her and supposedly Harry is upset with his brother for stepping out on his wife (???).  SO "stepping back" make sense, hope they have some savings because i assumed they made the announcement after consultation with Buckingham Palace and apparently they did not.  Came as a surprise to the Queen too, she can't be happy.  I bet they lose their titles and would not be surprised if they did not have a place to stay when they visit UK.  Ahh, the troubles of the rich and famous!

back to life in reality, i have a ton of work to do plus i have to pay bills.  not going to be a rolling fun day and i will not have lots of time for chit-chat here.

Jack took the xmas decorations down yesterday, not that there were many to remove.  Boo was very upset as he loves his tree and posing in front of it, here is a snap for posterity, as you can see, not a really big tree:

i know i tend to whine about the temperature but georgia houses are not built like houses in the north and it is just cold!  it was 29 degrees when i woke up this morning.  ugh.  current situation:

This read is interesting, 3 low-tech ways to improve your brain to help reduce dementia and Alzheimer's markers.

  1. Exercise the body.  7500 steps a day (my new goal!) is enough to make a difference
  2. Exercise the mind.  any new activity, puzzles, knitting, socializing will help
  3. get enough sleep.  what is enough?  depends on the person but in the 7 to 8 hour range

here is one from the Consumer Electronics Show or CES in Las Vegas.  Never thought i would see the day you could build a vibrator on the floor of the CES!  https://www.inputmag.com/tech/i-built-my-own-vibrator-at-craves-ces-booth

my original major in college was anthropology (until i discovered how hard it would be to support myself) and i am always fascinated by very early civilizations and ultimately "where we came from".  this story opens up a whole new world of possibilities with the discovery of a new ancient species.  it is freaky how much closer they look to humans than previous "missing links":  https://www.inverse.com/article/52665-australopithecus-sediba-ancient-human-debate?link_uid=37&utm_campaign=inverse-daily-2020-01-09&utm_medium=inverse&utm_source=newsletter

in cat news.  Boo comes to me every afternoon, outs his paws on my thigh and meows for treats.  its cute and i am usually ready for a break so i go into the kitchen and get him one.  today, for the first time EVER Miss Lily came to me meowing at the top of her little lungs.  then she would walk away looking at me and kept on doing this until i followed her.... to her crunchy food dish.  she could see the bottom, it was not full!  she would not stop the noise until i filled it up and no white dish bottom was evident.  🤦‍♀️  they are so lucky i work from home!

here they are in an October picture

this was fun today:  https://www.instagram.com/p/B7GlxQtFGH5/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet

i had to pay estimated taxes today.  writing checks to the IRS always makes me cranky and gives me sweaty palms, so i am signing off.

day four of intermittent fasting

meals:
  1. 2 cups coffee
  2. kombucha
  3. low fat yogurt and babka
  4. more leftover vodka pasta and sausage (when will it end???)  leftover broccoli
  5. cheese and crakers

hump day?

wednesday, january 8, 2020

so i discovered a flaw in how i have been thinking about my 16:8 intermittent eating plan.  i was timing from when i had my first meal and really focusing on the 8 hours i am allowed to eat (it is all about me!) instead of focusing on the 16 hour fast.  so i really need to say, no eating after 6pm, no matter what and that would allow me to eat starting at 10am the following day.  i should really do 9 to 5 eating so i may shoot for that, but no pushing past 6pm, preferably 5pm.  and that last meal really should not be a big one, soup or salad.  the bigger meal should be midday at the latest.  once i am competent at this i will flex for visits with my niece in atlanta after work.  we try to meet early but sometimes we may not sit down to eat until 6pm and i need to figure how to allow for that.  i also need to figure weekends, i hope Jack likes eating dinner early!

now that my mental process dump is complete, on to more exciting things this chilly wednesday.

found information on what to do in the event of a nuclear bomb exploding near you.  this used to be something one only saw in movies but now, thanks to our current president it could be a reality, here is the recommendation:  https://www.inverse.com/article/62163-nuclear-explosion-safety-plan?link_uid=56&utm_campaign=inverse-daily-2020-01-08&utm_medium=inverse&utm_source=newsletter

saw this article today about unhappy Everlane  employees:
https://www.fastcompany.com/90449436/everlane-is-the-latest-company-to-come-under-fire-for-a-toxic-workplace?utm_campaign=eem524%3A524%3As00%3A20200108_fc&utm_medium=Compass&utm_source=newsletter
while it does not give much detail, it looks like management is not listening to line staff and based on a company that prides itself on transparency with its workforce, it is not a good look.  It pales in comparison to the issues at Away were the CEO was downright nasty to workforce: https://www.theverge.com/2019/12/5/20995453/away-luggage-ceo-steph-korey-toxic-work-environment-travel-inclusion

it is really too bad, i like both of these companies but not sure i can continue to support.

on the privacy front, India as put forward their privacy bill and it contradicts directly with one main part of GDPR, the legal right to process.  the most popular rights in GDPR are Consent and Legitimate Interest.  Hotels use legitimate interest as the basis to process reservation information and follow up marketing.  Under PDPB (India's bill) they do not recognize Legitimate Interest which means that hotels will need to get consent (and track consent) prior to sending out confirmations and any additional follow up or marketing. Will be a pain if this shows up in final law, i will track as i am sure y'all are fascinated by this ;-)

today's snack is much better than yesterday's:

~~~~~~
day 3 of intermittent fasting plan
meals:
  1. coffee - 2 cups
  2. leftover pasta with vodka sauce and sausage
  3. kombucha
  4. snack: slices of apple, banana, strawberry and stick of cheddar cheese.
  5. two hotdogs (no bun) and broccoli
tuesday, january 7, 2020
tuesdays, so many desired outcomes.  monday is over and you are supposed to be fresh and ready to go but i feel it is the most difficult day of the week.  there is so much expectation for success on a tuesday that it is hard to live up to.  especially the first tuesday of the month, year, decade.  ugh
speaking of tuesdays, this study on anxiety was conducted using the genome database of us military veterans.  not sure what the female/male ratio of the db is but i guess it is predominantly male, like most studies we need more female representation:  https://www.inverse.com/article/62123-study-anxiety-genome-variants
also on inverse is this cool story on the crab nebula that gives a visual understanding of how it was formed.  https://www.inverse.com/article/62135-3d-visualization-of-ancient-supernova?link_uid=60&utm_campaign=inverse-daily-2020-01-07&utm_medium=inverse&utm_source=newsletter
i'm always looking at ways to work smarter and more efficiently.  this article in fast company offers suggestions:  https://www.fastcompany.com/90448476/how-to-get-more-done-by-doing-less?utm_campaign=eem524%3A524%3As00%3A20200107_fc&utm_medium=Compass&utm_source=newsletter
the last suggestion is someone who takes tuesday off.  maybe i'm not the only one who hates tuesday!
my snacks this afternoon:  not great but better than some days
the apples and balanced breaks are very tasty.  the fiber one brownie, not so much.  def not worth 70 calories!
not feeling the buzz today, definitely a tuesday
~~~~~~

day two of intermittent fasting.  start eating at 10:30am and end at 6:30pm .

  1. fiber one honey clusters (not as filling or tasty as the regular fiber one) with skim milk and kombucha
  2. bologna - 3 oz
  3. snack - apple slices, balanced breaks and fiber one brownies.  really need to do better than this
  4. penne with vodkas sauce and sausage.  lots of parm cheese

stop eating at 6:30pm

Monday, January 6, 2020

change starts slowly

Monday, January is 6, 2020

Had to take the weekend off.  my beloved football team did not make it past the wildcard round and i am sad even though i doubted our chances.  cheers to new england patriots, here's to next year!

i watched hallmark movies yesterday - definitely soothes my sad soul!  also glad that the mysteries are back, this one was fun last night:

saw this list today: 100 of the best chefs in the world.  there was a time when i would have wanted to visit all of the restaurants and test the menu.  now i just wonder at the audacity of trying to make the list!  article is here: https://www.finedininglovers.com/article/best-chef-in-the-world-2020

on the complete opposite end of this spectrum is this click-bait story about restaurants that will most likely be closing soon.  there is not any hard evidence in this article other than the trends of the past few years but it is a group of not always great chains that may have some nostalgia for you:  http://www.moneypop.com/business/these-restaurant-chains-are-closing-up-shop/

one of my 2020 list of life changes (i will not call them goals) is to improve health via a better diet and to move more.  specifically my doctor wants me to do 30 minutes of cardio 5 days a week.  he said to start at 20 and work my way up to 30 minutes get my heart rate to 115 to 120 and use the exercise app to keep track.  ugh.  cannot start it all at once so......

~~~
today i start the 16:8 intermittent fasting plan.  i was up and at my desk working at 6AM, two cups of coffee and i was able to hold off on first meal until 9:45am so i can eat until 5:45pm.  thinking of my first meal as 1st meal instead of breakfast is helping me get my head around this.  lets see how it goes.
meal
  1. leftover spaghetti and my sauce from last night.  about 1/3 cup plus kombucha
  2. 2 oz bh bologna and 12 oz water and ice
  3. samosa
  4. leftover indian from saturday night - seekh kabob, peas palou and naan (i will be happy when all of the left over food is gone)
  5. 12 oz water
  6. cream of tomato soup
first friday of the year
had to visit the office today, will be a long day.  left at 6:15am and at my desk at 7am, gotta love holiday traffic, only 45 minutes!!  got my favorite parking space:
it's going to be a great day!
it is truly the little things that make life good.  an easy drive despite the fog and just getting my regular space makes me smile. l
time for a list of what makes me smile
what makes me smile:
  • Boo & Lily greeting me in the morning
  • a warm bathroom
  • clean sheets
  • my parking space
  • having a garage for my car so i do not get wet when it is raining out
need to continue this list each day
i found this on insta and it made me smile - gotta love floridians!
here it is a little easier to read:
doing inventory - going to be a long night
someone bought little debbie cream pies into the office today.  good memories, but deadly.
time to do inventory.  werk werk werk
great day!
hello 2020
hello 2020
another new year and a whole new decade.  2019 was a crazy year that i would rather forget so here we go 2020!
kicking off the year with random thoughts and photos.  I have to make my work goal plan for 2020 and decided i need to do the same for my personal goals.  not resolutions, those never work but an actual list of things i want to achieve this year.  if i write it down, it will happen, correct???
i finished 2019 by passing my CIPM exam, totally surprised as i did not think i would pass as i barely studied.  yay!   some things for 2020
  • study/take/pass CIPP/e exam
  • dr l wants me to try intermittent fasting.  supposed to be good for health
  • dr b wants me to do cardio at least 20 minutes a day, 5 days a week.  goal would be 30 minutes.  next visit is in june so 6 months and clock is ticking
  • need to fit these 3 items into my daily routine
Boo overseeing my first bloody mary of the year
this is how Boo greats the new year
Lily & Boo always fighting for the comfy sleeping place
Boo from a few years ago, posted in insta and showed up in my feed.
my post says it was 6 degrees that day. yikes!
